The Custom
Design Process

What you need to know about custom design.
Every custom designed piece of jewelry basically goes through the same process and we are here to help you every step of the way.

Step One: It always starts with a meeting.
Once you decide to create something unique, it simply starts by talking. This is the time to discuss what you are looking for. You might have seen something in a magazine that caught your eye. At this stage, we ask questions to get to know you better. Are you looking for something traditional, vintage, or contemporary in look and feel? Are you extremely active? If so, we’ll want to think about specific metals. How and where you will be wearing this piece is extremely important. We may be updating some family heirlooms or outdated jewelry. Basically, this is the time we get a clear idea of your vision.

CAD jewelry design

Step Two: Rendering & CAD Technology
Once we’ve had our chat and have an understanding of what you are looking for, we’ll provide you with a rendering. If it’s approved, we will move this design to CAD (Computer Aided Design). CAD technology analyzes and modifies your design, shape, detail, and texture. Your finished CAD Design will provide you the most realistic look of the final piece. This is the stage where any changes and modifications can happen.

Step Three: The Wax
3D wax models are optional and available upon request. The 3D wax model allows you to see and feel your creation before the design is cast in precious metal. From this point it only takes a few short weeks before your design is ready for you to enjoy and share with the world.

Step Four: Casting & Setting
At this stage, your custom designed piece is now ready to be cast in the precious metal of your choice. It starts with embedding the wax sculpture in plaster. Then the chosen metal is melted and poured, creating a “rough cast”. At that point, our Donald Haack artisans begin their work! Gemstones are set, and they begin to work on the metal finish. Metal finishes can range from a high polish, brushed, satin or any one of the multitudes of unique finishes.

Step Five: The Presentation
This part is by far the most fun. After the piece is cast and finished, we then inspect it one last time, prior to presenting it to you, to ensure every detail meets your expectations!

One great reason for Custom Design: You can turn something old into something new!

You may have inherited some jewelry (or purchased jewelry long ago) that is no longer your style, or you no longer wear. That’s the perfect scenario to consider taking those pieces and creating something you will cherish and wear for a lifetime! It may be small custom design changes that will freshen it up but keep the intrinsic design. Or, maybe you feel the need for a complete restyle. Custom jewelry design is the perfect alternative to make something old new again, or to start from the very beginning and let your inspiration run wild! And remember, we do buy gold, diamonds, and estate pieces. Bring it to Donald Haack Diamonds first and you can apply your earnings toward the creation of something new.

FAQ's

How long will a custom design take to complete?

That can vary based on the complexity of the project. It’s important to note you will be kept up to date throughout the technical process. Generally, a custom designed piece of jewelry can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks.

I know I want something unique, but I don’t really have an idea of what I want.

Can I leave the design totally up to you?Of course! But, we’ll want to get a clear vision of your likes and dislikes. A great start may be to go through fashion magazines and tear out some looks that you love. Many of our customers also turn to Pinterest for inspiration and share their pins with us.

Is custom work refundable?

Sadly, no. Custom designed jewelry involves metal, gems, and labor furnished for a specific client. Custom jewelry is non-refundable and requires a 50% non-refundable deposit before the final work begins. Full payment upon receipt of custom work will happen upon your complete satisfaction. Remember you are seeing it every step of the way. And, during the CAD process, you still have time to make changes!

Is it affordable?

Custom jewelry design does not necessarily mean it will be more expensive. It all has to do with the complexity of the design and the amount of precious metal and number of gemstones you’ll be using. When we sit down with you, we’ll be discussing not only the design itself, but we’ll also provide an estimate of costs.

I saw a design and want the exact piece. Can you do that?

Jewelry designs are protected by copyright law and considered the designer’s intellectual property. Looking at the design will, however, provide us with a greater understanding of what you’re looking for and will help us provide you with something truly one-of-a-kind and special!
